In April, a long and hard-fought campaign, led by Compassion supporters, achieved its goal: Recognition in UK law that animals can think and feel.

This is a moment for celebration for everyone who signed petitions, donated in response to this five-year battle, wrote to politicians or spread the word. The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 is YOUR victory.

Vital links between animal welfare and environmental crises are set to be formally recognised at a global level, after the adoption of a historic resolution at the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly.

Compassion's team, and our Trustee Josphat Ngonyo, played key roles in campaigning for the resolution, which calls on the UN Environment Programme to produce a report on the links between animal welfare, the environment and sustainable development.

Over 300 companies in Europe have now committed to move to rearing slower-growing chickens in higher welfare conditions.

And, thanks to Compassion supporters, we have expanded our work with food businesses in Asia: Both Carrefour Taiwan and ZOO GROUP in China have now pledged to switch to cage-free eggs!

This spring, your Westminster ad campaign called-out the UK Government's failure to keep many of its promises for animals – including ending live exports and reviewing the use of cages in farming.

Thankfully the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill has now been carried over to the new Parliamentary session. So we're working hard to ensure it finally becomes law and delivers a ban on live exports for slaughter or fattening from all of Great Britain.

Last year, thanks to Compassion supporters and campaigners across 28 countries, the European Commission committed to drafting legislation to phase out caged farming in the EU.

With a mandate from 1.4 million people who signed the End the Cage Age European Citizens' Initiative, we're working to ensure that over 300 million animals each year really do get better lives.
